Meet Our Team: Workshop Facilitator & Kundalini Teacher Karen
AGY’ers, meet Karen, she is one of our workshop facilitator and Kundalini teachers. For the past 5 years she has hosted many different woman’s events including retreats, book clubs, hikes, tea parties, workshops for personal growth and goal-setting, and DIY craft events. She’s passionate about holding space for women to come together and explore their creativity. Karen calls on her ancestral wisdom, knowledge and intuition to guide her through any of her events, she constantly works on channeling her grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s love, humility and wisdom. She considers Kundalini to be the mother yoga, and she uses its sacred, powerful and scientific technologies to relax and restore the body’s systems simultaneously, increasing flexibility, energy, and overall strength. Get to know Karen more in our interview with her below and check back often for updates on her workshops and events with us!
AGY: What is a random fact about you?
Karen: I was born in Mexico and migrated with my family at the age of 5. I learned to speak fluent English by the age of 11 through a mixture of school, kids TV shows and rap music.
AGY: What brings you most joy and why?
Karen: Teaching yoga, especially to any of my family members, and the Mexican, Hispanic and Latinx community. It is a practice that connects us with our ancestors and with God.
AGY: How did you get into Yoga?
Karen: I explored various yoga practices at a hot yoga studio near my home, which eventually led me to a Kundalini yoga and meditation class. A few months later I attended a Kundalini yoga retreat in Costa Rica and felt so powerful and peaceful after each meditation practice, I knew teaching was how I would continue to learn and deepen my practice the most.
AGY: What is your favorite asana and why?
Karen: My favorite asana is baby pose, it allows me to release any tension I may be holding, especially in my hips. It also allows me to feel and connect to my breath instantly, it activates my 6th Chakra as I place my Third Eye to Mother Earth.
AGY: Why are you passionate about teaching yoga?
Karen: When students leave class feeling more inner peace and personal power, I feel fulfilled, and when I teach, I learn the most about myself.
AGY: What is your Astrology Sign and how do you relate to it?
Karen: I am a Cancer, a moon child. Just like the moon, I go through phases. Like a good Cancer, I ride the emotional waves and flow like water, I wear my heart on my sleeve and I’m proud of it. I love discussing how we’re feeling and how we’re healing.
AGY: If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Karen: I’d have dinner with my great grandmother, Loretito. I have very few memories with her but call on her every time I teach. She was the healer of the small town I was born in and everyone came to her for all types of physical and spiritual healing.
AGY: What is your favorite hobby, aside from yoga?
Karen: I love to create! I make things with my hands, DIY & macrame.
AGY: If you were stranded on a desert island, what are the three items would you bring?
Karen: Water, sage & matches.
AGY: What is one thing you have learned from quarantine?
Karen: Being quarantined has provided me with so many new opportunities. I’ve learned to let go and allow things to come to me. Allow, allow, allow.
